4 out of 5 stars Trailz Enlightened IZip   September 2, 2010

I've had this Trailz Enlightened IZip bike for a month now an have been riding it almost 20 miles a day commuting to work. So far, it's been great!

I heard a redesigned model will be coming out soon for 2011 so they are selling the remaining 2010 models for a grand now. Keep in mind a battery replacement costs half the price of the bike so I hope it lasts at least a few years. The Lithium batteries are supposed to last a lot longer and handle more charges so it should be fine. It comes with a year warranty from the manufacturer for bike and battery. The manufacturer has been very helpful over the phone answering questions.

I got caught in a heavy rain storm a week ago and was worried it might damage the bike but it worked fine in the rain and since. I was thinking I might caulk the bottom of the bike a little to make it more waterproof but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

It has 21 gears, disc brakes, front shocks, and really looks like a regular bike. I don't think anyone suspects it's electric assisted. Oh, and it's really quiet. The electric assist on this bike is just an assist, you have to pedal but it does about half the work for you. Even though it's heavier than a standard bike, if the battery goes runs out it works fine as a regular 21 speed bike to get you home.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy a Currie Technologies product!   August 25, 2010

My wife purchased an Izip Urban Cruiser through Amazon approximately two and a half years ago. The bike was supposed to be a cost saving surprise for me. But where I live I can rarely ride it! In addition, I have spent at least another $200 dollars (unnecessarily) and hours upon hours of time dealing with this very sensitive bicycle. By "sensitive" I am referring to the batteries and--as far as I can tell--ALL of the electrical parts and connections.

Prior to purchase, my wife thoroughly looked over Izip's website. Nowhere did she see that the batteries for this piece of junk cannot be exposed to temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit--EVER! Moreover, the electrical connections seem to be overly sensitive to cold temperatures (which is something I've never encountered in my extensive small engine experience). This isn't a problem for wealthy people like Ed Begley and Darryl Hannah, who were on the company's website promoting the bikes, to cruise around sunny southern California. I split my time between Montana and northern New Mexico. This means I cannot ride this Izip product for most of the year.

Customer service-wise, the company did not reply to my emails two years ago; and just today, after expressing my concerns to a customer service rep. (who, in a nutshell, said it was my wife's fault she didn't know about the batteries because she bought the bike through Amazon and not directly from Izip) I was hung up on in the process of being transferred to a tech. And yes, I was polite--forceful and serious (no chagrined chuckling)-- but definitely polite.

Unless you live in southern California, southern Arizona, border Texas, the Gulf Coast, Florida, or Hawaii, do not buy this bicycle because you will not be able to ride it for three to six months of the year. Also, if you do buy one, go to your local bike shop and replace the stupid tires and tubes with something practical and affordable.

Also, you do not want to ride this thing without having the battery power available, the frame is very heavy (without the batteries)and the electrical system very sensitive for practical commuting use. This bike is great for movies stars to play around with, but for working folks, it will only add to your burdens.
