4 out of 5 stars Intro Bike   March 7, 2010
Thomas J. Dolan (Greater Cleveland, OH)
I purchased this bike mostly as a "get around town when I can't afford a car" deal, and all in all, I am happy. Made the purchase on a Friday, received the bike on that Saturday and opened the box. I have minimal experience building bikes, but the hardest part was removing the protective cardboard from the frame. The front wheel was off, the front brakes were not hooked up, the seat was off, and the handle bars were off. A metric hex wrench, a pair of vice grips and some elbow grease had her fully built in half and hour. The instructions on construction were vague at best, but they really weren't missed. Anyone with any technical savvy at all will be able to put this bike together with no problems. I am not too fond of the pedals, but they definetally work. They are just a bit bulky for my taste. The way the front break is set out-of-box causes the left pad to grind the rim, but this is easily adjusted with a screwdriver and hex wrench. The gears are a bit iffy on deciding which gear they want to be in, but this can be fixed with an on-road tool kit and some patience. I havn't been on a bike in six years, and I have been accustomed to heavy mountain bikes, so this ride took some getting used to. However, she performs exactly for what I bought her for. She is an ideal beginner, or first "road" bike. As with all bikes of this calibur, I bought her as a substitute for the more expensive professional road bikes, and I feel, aside for the few issues mentioned above, she performs that job quite well. Especially for the price. The only reason I gave the bike 4 stars is because I will quickly need to replace the seat, for comfortable, it is not. Also, I wish the handlebars were more adjustable for height. I am forced to lean in a position that is awkward for me, although I am built quite awkward to begin with (6' with long legs and a small torso). All in all, a 5 star product, with a few undesired tweak necessities, and the fact that I need to buy something to make the product usable in my eyes reduces a star.

Hope this helps!
Tom

I bought the Sportiva ("Sport" Select Series) recently and have put about 120 miles on it so far. If there was something wrong or cheap about it I probably would have discovered it by now. I decided on a large frame size (I'm 6') and it is just right. The only assembly required was put the front wheel on, saddle on, reflectors, handle bar, a few other little things, and I had to connect one cable to the gear shifter. The bike didn't come with a kick-stand so I bought one at Wal-Mart. So far the Sportiva has been a very smooth rider (considering your riding on a smooth road) and easy to control and maneuver. People generally think of a road bike as being light, fast, sleek, and uncomfortable. The Sportiva is all but uncomortable. The handle bar is easy to reach and there is absolutley no back or rear end pain on long rides (even though the seat is narrow). The top bar of the frame is closer to the stem than I had ever seen before, this keeps you in a comfortable, semi-leaned over position. That keeps you comfortable but also in a "ready" position, something that cruiser bikes don't give you. The handle grips are ergonomic shaped (not like standard grips) and fit your hand naturally. The Shimano shifters for the 3 gears and 8 speeds are very nice. Each shifter has a lever and a trigger for lower and higher shifting (no twist shifters). I think these with last a long time. The color of the bike looks like black and gray and in other lights looks more brown and gray, it's simple but nice-classy if you will. I was happy to find most of the bike painted (spokes, handle bar, seat post) so it shouldn't rust easy. Lastly the Sportiva is a typical road bike (thin tires) but a very timeless one. I think this bike will age quite nicely and be a good looking classic one day. Very nice, very sporty, very fast, and very good price. Can't go wrong!
