Amazon.com Bicycle Buying Guide Finding the Right Bike To really enjoy cycling, it's important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike: The Right Ride In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories: - Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
- Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
- Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.
The Right Price A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability. - Entry-level--You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
- Mid-range--Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the "sweet spot." Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
- High-end--Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultra-lightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.
The Right Size Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips: - Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
- Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
- Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.
The Right Accessories When you make a bike purchase, don't forget these crucial add-ons: - Helmet (this is a must!)
- Seat pack
- Lock
- Hydration pack, or water bottles and bottle cages
- Spare tubes
- Portable bike pump
- Gloves

Converted to Straight Bars March 9, 2010 Robert W. Satsky (Houston Tx) This is an excellent bike. We purchased two one for my wife and 1 for me. They are very fast. On both bikes we replaced the drop bars with straight bars. This worked very well - as a matter of fact the shifters were designed for mountain bike bars. With the bars we had to replace the brake levers - purchased those from REI for 16 bucks. I also replaced brake pads as many reviews noted they were poor. The new ones seem better. The best overall feature on this bike is the wheel tire size. This wheels are 700c by 28. The 700c part is common for all road bikes but the by 28 is fairly rare. The 28 is small as compared to mountain bikes and even some hybrids but not so small as the race bikes. This means fast rolling with more protection against poor riding surfaces. Also means the tires are at max pressure at 80 psi instead of 120+ psi. My guess is you will see more and more bikes use this tire size as it is quite frankly ideal. One last note regarding flats, if this is your first road bike be prepared to air the tires before each daily ride. This is just a fact of all high pressure low volume tires. If you do this you will have less "pinch flats." Second note: You will have to learn how to change the tube without using a tool/screwdriver to get the tire back on the wheel. If you use a tool you will rupture the tube. Just watch [...] there are plenty of how to videos there.
great value for the price! March 7, 2010 Nick Tullos (Blanchard, La) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought the bike for an Ironman race in a couple of months. I know I will not be the fastest on the race, but this bike will handle its own. This is a good starter bike for someone who likes to tinker or someone who is going to take the bike to a bike shop for a setup. This was my first bike since I was a kid. I found all the tutorials needed on youtube for adjustments and setups.
1. Tune up / setup up the bike so it will shift/brake properly (youtube videos or bike shop)
2. BEFORE you even test ride the bike remove the tires and look for metal cuts in the wheel which will give you a flat tire on your first ride! File down metal cuts. I've read about this problem many times, but I figure I could ride at least a couple of miles without a problem. Well I should have just take the advice give many times. I have had a flat since the first day.
3. Gets some narrower tires when you order the bike. I also saw a review on youtube about this bike with that comment. I got Avenir Discovery 700c Road Tires (Black, 700 x 23c)from amazon and I have been very happy with these narrow tires. You might want to get some blinking lights and speedometer also.
4. I did have a problem with shipping damage, but kent cycles took care of it.
I'm very happy with the bike for the price. Got me on the road for cheap.
Mens 21 speed bike February 24, 2010 K. Frank (Penn Valley, Ca.) This is a very nice bike for the money. They use excellent quality components. The assembly manual could be better written but the fit and finish of the bike is first rate. The shifting on this bike is first class. All in all. you willl get a lot of enjoyment and exercise out of the bike. Amazon has a winner.
Great Looking Bike February 15, 2010 winterbiker 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have just completed my first week with the Denali and so far I'm very impressed.I did have to make a few adjustments out of the box, gears, brakes, derailleur trim, leveled the seat, and loosened the hubs just slightly but I expected to do these things since it didn't come through a store. The bike is very comfortable and fast.Brakes work quite well.I would recommend that for anyone who is not up to the task of adjusting things bring it to a bicycle mechanic and get a tune up.It will be money well spent and you will still be ahead of the game.I added fenders to mine because I ride it in the snow.Mine is used as a daily commuter.
Nice bike February 13, 2010 K. Hylbert (Nicholasville Kentukcky) I just received my Deanli Mens' Road bike. It came in perfect condition. I really like the looks of the 2010 models. I was going to purchase a bike last year, and to be honest I was hesitant to buy the GMC Denali after reading other reviews. I decided to wait and get a bike store bike. Well having two kids, a mortgage, layoff, etc. I wasn't able to get a bike last year at all. I told myself and my wife "I would rather get try my luck with this bike than go another year not riding." Well, I haven't had a chance to ride it much, but what I have seen so far is that it is a pretty nice bike for the price. I am a larger sized guy (6'3 220 lbs) and this fits me perfect.
I will post back later on after I ride it some more and see how the parts hold up. But as of right now I couldn't be more pleased.
